ÞEISTAREYKIR

Embark on an adventurous two-day tour to North-eastern Iceland, delving into the very origins of geothermal utilisation in the country. You’ll have the opportunity to explore Iceland’s newest and most advanced power station at Þeistareykir, as well as the renowned Krafla power station, where the world’s hottest geothermal well was drilled. Gain insight into how geothermal energy is harnessed for district heating and cultivating vegetables in greenhouses.

Along the journey, immerse yourself in the unique landscape that has served as the backdrop for numerous Hollywood films and TV programs, including Game of Thrones. Witness powerful waterfalls, impressive eruption craters, and traverse a 40-year-old lava flow where NASA once trained its astronauts for the Apollo Program. Engage with locals who happily reside on a volcano, adding a personal touch to your experience. In the trip you will have the opportunity to visit Dimmuborgir, Grjótagjá and Hverir, as well as the energy production facilities in the area.

During your excursion, the group will spend one night at a hotel situated on the picturesque banks of Lake Mývatn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity, volcanic terrain, and wetlands. Here, you’ll indulge in the flavours of Icelandic traditional cuisine, an experience likely to leave a lasting impression, and relish the chance to unwind at the Mývatn nature baths.

Departure will be from the domestic airport in Reykjavik on the morning of May 31st.  A bus will pick the group up at Akureyri airport and follow the group throughout the field trip. In the evening of June 1st, the bust will drive the group again to Akureyri airport for a flight back to Reykjavik city.
