District heating cycle tour

The district heating cycle tour is a cycle event where resource experts lead participants on enlightening bicycle tours and educational journeys focused on vital Reykjavík infrastructure.

Reykjavík is endowed with diverse and abundant natural resources. It is the role of Reykjavík Energy and its daughter companies do harness these resources and use them to improve the quality of life of its customers. Elliðaárstöð and Orkuveitan will be hosting an event where Reykjavík Energy’s resource experts will lead participants in cycling tours highlighting some of the capital area’s resources.

There are over 3000 km of pipes that supply the grater Reykjavík area with heat to the houses and hot water for showers and swimming pools. The length of these pipes would go at least twice around the country along the ring road. Before the time of district heating, Reykjavík was cold and saturated with coal smog. But the district heating company has now kept citizens warm for almost 100 years.

Participants will cycle 35 km of mountain and gravel bike routes through the local area. Participants will learn about the geothermal resource from which Reykjavík derives its name and the infrastructure that has been built to provide us with this important life quality that is hot water.

Participants will have access of mountain-bikes/gravel-bikes or electric bikes at 17:00 at Elliðaárstöð, Rafstöðvarvegur 6. Þráinn Friðriksson, Sædís Ólafsdóttir and Ingvi Gunnarsson, resource experts at Reykjavík Energy, will lead the bike rides and share interesting information and stories. Participation will have a refreshment stop on the way.
